چکیده

Consider the problem of finding optimal bounds on the expected value of piece-wise polynomials over all measures with a given set of moments. This is a special class ofGeneralized Tchebycheff Inequalities in probability theory. We study this problem within the framework of conic programming. Relying on a general approximation scheme for conic programming, we show that these bounds can be numerically computed or approximated via semidefinite programming. We also describe some applications of this class of Generalized Tchebycheff Inequalities in probability, finance, and inventory theory. A New Mathematical Approach based on Conic Quadratic Programming for the Stochastic Time-Cost Tradeoff Problem in Project Management

In this paper, we consider a stochastic Time-Cost Tradeoff Problem (TCTP) in PERT networks for project management, in which all activities are subjected to a linear cost function and assumed to be exponentially distributed. The aim of this problem is to maximize the project completion probability with a pre-known deadline to a predefined probability such that the required additional cost is min...

A Short Proof of Strassen’s Theorem Using Convex Analysis

We give a simple proof of Strassen’s theorem on stochastic dominance using linear programming duality, without requiring measure-theoretic arguments. The result extends to generalized inequalities using conic optimization duality and provides an additional, intuitive optimization formulation for stochastic dominance.

Lifting for conic mixed-integer programming

Lifting is a procedure for deriving valid inequalities formixed-integer sets from valid inequalities for suitable restrictions of those sets. Lifting has been shown to be very effective in developing strong valid inequalities for linear integer programming and it has been successfully used to solve such problems with branch-and-cut algorithms. Here we generalize the theory of lifting to conic i...

A Conic Integer Programming Approach to Stochastic Joint Location-Inventory Problems

We study several joint facility location and inventory management problems with stochastic retailer demand. In particular, we consider cases with uncapacitated facilities, capacitated facilities, correlated retailer demand, stochastic lead times, and multicommodities. We show how to formulate these problems as conic quadratic mixed-integer problems. Valid inequalities, including extended polyma...

Separation and Extension of Cover Inequalities for Conic Quadratic Knapsack Constraints with Generalized Upper Bounds

M by addressing probabilistic 0–1 programs we study the conic quadratic knapsack polytope with generalized upper bound (GUB) constraints. In particular, we investigate separating and extending GUB cover inequalities. We show that, unlike in the linear case, determining whether a cover can be extended with a single variable is NP-hard. We describe and compare a number of exact and heuristic sepa...
